With metallics so popular these days, I find myself attracted to anything gold. I decided to add a simple shelving unit to our living room that I was already in the process of changing. I liked the simplicity of the VITTSJO unit from ikea, but the black was too harsh so I decided to get out the trusty spray paint and change the look of it.
VITTSJO Ikea Hack with Gold Shelving
After being inspired from a few different projects on Pinterest I decided to cover the top and bottom shelves with marble contact paper as well to allow these two shelves to blend better with the gold colour of the unit.
Since this shelving unit is in the corner of our living room, which used to have a table and lamp. I purchased the RANARP from Ikea and attached the lamp to the top of the unit to add some light to this corner of the room. I chose this lamp because it was white with gold detail that matched the unit perfectly.

Gold Spray Paint (2 cans)
Marble Contact Paper (1 roll)
Step 1. Assemble the VITTSJO unit following the instructions provided. Before attaching the shelves take the unit outside and lay down on a drop cloth. Spray the unit with 3 light coats. Leaving a 30 minute dry time in between each coat.
Step 2. While the unit is drying you can attach the marble contact paper to the top and bottom shelf. I suggest cutting the piece needed for the shelf first, that way you don’t have to deal with holding the roll at the same time. Starting at the short end of the shelf slowly pull the backing off and gently smooth out the contact paper getting rid of any bubbles until you’ve covered the entire piece. Use scissors and cut off any access pieces.
Step 3. Once unit is dry attach the two marble shelves and 3 glass shelves to the unit and style your display with your favourite books, photos and trinkets.
